Descendants

I am a descendant of the Stoughton and Bracewell/Braswell Families who are notable for their historical significance and connections through intermarriage with influential families in colonial America and England.

Stoughton Family:

Historically significant in early England

  • Thomas Stoughton: An early Puritan settler who migrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s.
  • William Stoughton: The infamous chief justice during the Salem Witch Trials and a prominent political figure in colonial Massachusetts.

Notable Connections:

  • Winthrop Family (governors of Massachusetts)
  • Mather Family (prominent ministers and scholars)
  • Dudley Family (another elite Puritan family)

Their alliances strengthened their political and social standing in colonial New England.

Bracewell/Braswell Family

Traces back to England and became prominent in the Southern United States during the colonial era.

  • Rev. Robert Bracewell (1611-1668): An Anglican minister who settled in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia and became one of the first landowners and influential figures in the region.

Notable Connections:

Intermarried with other powerful families in the South, including

  • Blount Family: Prominent in North Carolina and Virginia politics
  • West Family: Descendants of Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, namesake of Delaware
  • Bennett Family: Early Virginia leaders and landowners

These alliances solidified the Bracewells’ position among the Southern gentry and contributed to their descendants influence in regional politics, agriculture, and church leadership.

Both families contributed to shaping early American society–one through theocratic governance in New England and the other Anglican leadership and landholding in the South. Their intermarriages with other prominent families created a network of influential descendants who played key roles in American history.
